How many identities do you have?
Wife & Mum: I am the proudest mum to two little girls; Sierra (4) and Ivy (8 months). I am the mum at the playground racing my girl to the swings and having competitions who can go the highest, whilst trying to hold hands. I love being a mother, it is the greatest excuse to act a like a kid again, laugh at little things, bake cakes and lick the spoon. Whether it’s dancing around the house, singing songs in the car or playing every character in a bedtime story, I love showing my girls how much beauty there is in this world when you remember to smile. I am a wife to my kiwi, surfer, nature-loving husband. He will forever be my calming influence in life, reminding me to slow down and take time to rest.
Adventure-loving thrill-seeker: I am a free-spirited, optimistic person who likes to live life to the full. I love finding new ways to have fun, be happy and experience life. I am a sport enthusiast (mainly soccer) but I love it all. The competitiveness, determination and motivation of athletes inspires me daily. I love that sense of exploration and finding beauty in the simple things in life.
Not to be forgotten: Sister, daughter, friend, teammate, entrepreneur, event manager.
Tell us a bit about your story and how you’ve got to where you are now professionally?
In high school I wanted to be like Catriona Rowntree on Getaway and travel the world (who didn’t?!). So, straight out of high school I completed a double degree in Journalism and Public Relations in the hope that it would get me closer to the dream. The Getaway dream subsided when I realised I had talents in unexpected areas.
When I first started out my career, I put my hand up to organise the office Christmas party. I loved the idea of creating an experience for people where they could relax and have fun; and so begun my love affair with event planning.
Throughout my career I have been fortunate enough to work across many industries including automotive, media, local government and sport. I believe what’s helped me along my path is never backing down from a challenge. I thrive on problem solving and no matter what is going on in my personal life, I always show up with a positive attitude. I think another key element to my professional journey is always being open to new opportunities. One opportunity saw me quit a full-time marketing job for an eight-week contract at Channel 9 to be a researcher for a program called Just Add Water. Call it youthful optimism or just plain crazy but I thought I would get another contract straight after. I didn’t. The show ended and so did the work. I went and worked for an engineering company in a data entry role for 3 months and every week called the Production Manager at the station asking if he had any jobs. Finally, he did! I ended up working at Channel 9 for three years and made incredible friends, gained the most valuable life and professional experiences I will keep with me forever. I think bravery pays off in the end.
I left Channel 9 for a role in local government. This role was the catalyst for me starting my business. Local government has a strong focus on training and development and I was required to complete two training sessions a year in my field, events. Unfortunately there were no event training providers around (outside of the formal institutions). I decided I wanted to be the one to provide people with the course I was looking for and would start providing half-day event training workshops. In August 2020, Monarch Management was born. My focus is on running fun, engaging event workshops and helping participants to unearth their true potential.
Amongst all this I have enjoyed the thrill of ground announcing the first ever Matildas game in Perth; organised a Socceroos World Cup qualifier match; spent two seasons travelling the country as a Team Manager for a semi-pro female sports team; and ran awards nights, openings and soccer grand finals in between.
As a female, what has been your greatest challenge in your career/business?
My greatest challenge has been being a female working in male-dominated industries. I started out in my early twenties in marketing for a car yard. It was an unpleasant environment at times, and I endured sexual harassment from a senior member of staff. I have always been a strong and confident individual, but this workplace set me up with some hard life lessons that taught me the type of strength I needed to get by.
What has been the hardest personal challenge you have faced in life thus far?
By far my hardest challenge was trying to fall pregnant with my first child. I had seven failed fertility attempts. It was brutal on my body, my mental health, my marriage and for our loved ones watching on helpless. I felt like I had failed as a woman and felt less feminine after every unsuccessful attempt.
How have you grown as a person, mentally, emotionally and spiritually since that challenge?
This challenge taught me a few things. One, that life doesn’t happen on my schedule. Working in events I rely on run sheets and checklists and I thought starting a family would run to my timeline. I had to relinquish control and trust in a power higher than myself
Second lesson was to not underestimate God or myself.
One day in desperation I prayed to God for guidance. I said, “I don’t need it to be easy, I just need it to be possible”. The guidance came that same day and it was so clear, see my Naturopath. I saw the Naturopath and decided to make some personal changes. I meditated daily to calm my mind and I visualised myself pregnant. I had a picture of myself on my wall – my face on a pregnant woman’s body. Three months after the first visit to the Naturopath I was pregnant. I was amazed how a mindset shift and removing stress had such a dramatic impact on the outcome. I will never underestimate my mind or my body again.
How do you plan to leave your mark on the world?
In all honesty I am still working this out.
I know I am driven by the purpose of delivering meaningful workshops for people to help build their confidence and provide them all the tools to run amazing events.
I know I am driven by the purpose of helping people realise their true potential. Whether it’s my girls, my husband, colleagues, family or friends – I’m driven by helping people to see their value in this world, allowing them to be the best version of themselves, even if they didn’t know they had it within them.
We all have something special to give the world but sometimes we need a little help finding what that something is. I thrive on any opportunity to help people realise this, because once you find it, there’s no stopping what you can achieve.
I plan to leave my mark in this world by teaching people to always find the sunshine in the day. To always remember to smile through the chaos. To always say good morning and thank you. To practice gratitude and to never stop working on yourself and allowing yourself to be vulnerable, strong and the master of your own destiny.
